My Last Entry

I used to think that Google was the answer to life and to the world. If I needed anything I would immediately go to Google and then Tadah!, the answer would be found. However, from taking BIT330 I have realized that there is are a plethora of tools out there that are beneficial to me. This blog will show how I changed my lifestyle from relying solely on Google to having a few new favorite tools.

Favorite Tools and How I use Them

  • General Search - Joongel
  • News Seach - Google News Timeline
  • Google Reader and RSS Feeds

I use Joongel for all my searching purposes. After realizing that Google may not always have the best results i decided to use Joongel because it was a meta search engine that allowed me to easily transfer between searching different sites. At first Joongel was a little hard getting used. However, I began to really like the UI and the ability to easily search multiple sites. For General Search I could choose between:

  • Google
  • Yahoo
  • Twitter
  • Delicious
  • Digg
  • Youtube
  • Wikipedia
  • Flickr
  • Yahoo Answers
  • Technorati

This ability really changed my perspective on general search. No longer was i limited by one site. This was the beginning of my transition to multiple tools.

Google Timeline

Previously, I always got my news by going to and if a i wanted to learn more about a certain topic i just went to Google News and queried that specific topic. Honestly, I really had no problem doing it this way. Google News is not a bad search and i really enjoyed the articles. However, the day that I tried Google Timeline, my life changed. I am a visual learner and when i saw that I could learn more about the news by seeing rather then just reading it. I was thrilled. What Google Timeline shows me how a certain topic has progressed throughout the week, it really helps me understand the complete big picture. Google Timeline has brought a new perspective to the meaning of News it really isn't just about reading articles but about understand how issues affect things. Now, i no longer use Google's regular news search, i am proud to say i use Google Timeline. However, Google is Google so i feel as though my alliance still hasn't shifted.

Google Reader and RSS Feeds

Remarkably, i had never known what or how to use an RSS Feed prior to this class. I honestly thought that an RSS Feed was some pointless tool that was just too confusing to use. Wow was i wrong. Out of all the tools that i currently use, RSS Feeds are probably the ones i use most. I currently use RSS Feeds to send news articles regarding the Chicago Bulls, Wall Street, and movie reviews directly to my RSS Reader which in this case is Google Reader. I personally don't have a preference to which reader i use but my past experience with Google has never lead me wrong. I practically stay up late at night playing with RSS Feeds and trying to figure out better ways to get up to date news. I recently started playing with Yahoo Pipes but have not had enough time to completely mater that tool. However, I feel that I have come a long way. I know use RSS Feeds and know that they are the coolest thing on the planet.

Few Words About Twitter

O Twitter what a way we have come. From first joining back in September I was very VERY critical about joining Twitter. I honestly just didn't believe it could be useful or that it was just not for me. Today my opinion is somewhat different but i would like to reflect on my experiences with Twitter. While initially my tweets were not getting published, i will admittedly say that i was extremely frustrated at times. However, time has changed my thought and i truly believe that Twitter can have a prominent effect on certain aspects of life. It allows news to spread fast and allows for quick and easy status updates. While Twitter may not be the perfect fit for me, i do believe that companies could greatly benefit from Twitter. Even though I personally do not like sending tweets, i think it is a great way for companies to connect with their customers. So although i may not have a twitter account for very long, I do intend on starting one for my Business Club here on campus. Twitter thanks for the experience!

These tools have really changed the way I interact online and they literally define my knowledge. I am extremely impressed by all the tools that we have learned and hope that i will be able to keep up with them in the future. On a final note, i just want to say that although all the tools above are useful, one tool that i particularly enjoy is Soovle, while completely purposeless and stupid i am somehow fascinated at playing with it. Off to learn more about search tools…Adios.
