Overview

Founded in 1996, Mamma.com is a "smart" metasearch engine that runs your query through multiple search engines. Today, Mamma.com seems to be a dead search engine. Mamma.com owned by Mark Cuban used to be a prominent website but in the past years has completely died.

Recently, Mamma.com was bought buy Copernic Inc., a company based in Quebec that specializes in web search technology.

The History of Mamma.com

Mamma.com was launched in 1996 by Herman Tumurcuoglu in Montreal, Canada. Mamma.com was one of the web's first tier 2 metasearch engines. Essentialy what that means is Mamma.com searches other search engines for relevant information and then returns that information back to the user.

Mamma.com Sold

On December 22, 2005, Mamma.com was acquired by Copernic Inc.

Scandal

On November 17, 2008, the SEC announced that it had charged Mark Cuban, one of the main investors of Mamma.com, with insider trading. It was alleged that he directed his broker to sell his entire 600,000 shares of stock in the company to avoid losses in excess of $750,000 based on insider information.

Its Doom

On June 30, 2009, Copernic Inc. sold Mamma.com to Empresario, a privately owned digital media network. This sale marked the end of the existence of Mamma.com
